Yesterday, we explored the stories behind the objects we hold onto—why we keep them, what they represent, and whether they still serve us. Today, let’s shift our focus from the physical to the intangible. Think about a belief, a habit, or a lesson you’ve carried forward from your past. Where did it come from? How has it shaped you? And does it still belong in your life today?
Just as objects can hold meaning, so can the ideas and practices we’ve inherited or adopted over time. Some of these intangible things serve us well, guiding us like a compass. Others might have outlived their usefulness, holding us back or keeping us stuck in old patterns. By reflecting on what we’ve carried forward, we can better understand how our past influences our present—and decide what we want to take with us into the future.
How to Approach This Reflection
Identify something you’ve carried forward. This could be a belief (e.g., “I have to work hard to be worthy”), a habit (e.g., always putting others first), or a lesson (e.g., “trust your instincts”).
Trace its origins. Where did this belief, habit, or lesson come from? Was it taught to you? Did you learn it through experience? Does it reflect your values, or someone else’s?
Evaluate its influence. How has this intangible thing shaped your life? Has it helped you? Hindered you? Both?
Decide if it still belongs. Does this belief, habit, or lesson align with who you are now? Does it serve the life you’re trying to build? Or is it time to let it go?
We are all shaped by what we carry forward—both the tangible and the intangible. While some of these things become foundational parts of who we are, others may no longer fit. The beauty of reflection is that it allows us to choose what stays and what goes. Just as we might donate an old sweater or repurpose a cherished object, we can also re-examine and refine the beliefs and habits that define us.
So, what have you carried forward? And does it still belong in your life?
Take a moment to sit with these questions, and see where they lead you.
