Expectation
Prompt 03.09
When you open your eyes in the morning, do you anticipate the day with joy or brace yourself for frustration? It's tempting to see morning moods as merely reactions to what's happening around us, but they might actually set the tone for everything that follows.
Reflecting on the past year, think about how often you've genuinely expected joy versus frustration as your feet hit the floor. It's easy—and entirely human—to slip into a mindset of bracing for impact, especially in a radically unpredictable world. Yet, how often has a shift in your morning perspective noticeably improved your day?
Maybe you've found that even a small adjustment—like consciously anticipating something positive—can ripple through your interactions, making your day more fulfilling. There's power in understanding that our knowledge of the world, and of ourselves, is always incomplete. We rarely know exactly what the day will bring, so why assume the worst? Approaching uncertainty with openness and flexibility can not only safeguard your day from becoming fragile to life's inevitable hiccups but also help you build a habit of optimism rooted in creative problem-solving.
In the coming year, consider making joy your default expectation. After all, optimism isn't naive if it springs from a realistic belief in your own ability to adapt, learn, and grow. Even small shifts in your morning mindset can guide you toward more positive and fulfilling experiences each day.
